The East Carolina University Community School involves cross campus collaboration to provide the students a spectrum of support and services to comprehensively address their academic, social-emotional, physical, and family/community needs.  The school will include one class per grade level for kindergarten through fifth grade.  The Community School involves an integrated partnership with Pitt County Schools and will be housed within a local elementary school.

 

As an educator within the East Carolina University School, the EC Coordinator/special education teacher will collaborate to cultivate a culture of innovation that supports effective academic and behavior interventions and practices to promote academic and personal success for all students, including those with disabilities, in the school.  In particular, this includes providing or coordinating the provision of 10 special education and related services as identified on eligibile students' Individualized Education (IEPs) and/or 504 Plans, 2) allowavle accommodations and/or assistive technology throughout instruction and assessment, and 3) work collaboratively with other facilities and implement innovative instruction to achieve the mission of the school.  

 

In addition, the special educator will be responsible for 1) collaborating in providing positive behavior and support to all students, 2) assisting with the collecting and analyzing student data used in progress monitoring, and 3) collaborating in teh IEP process.  As the Exceptional Children's Directo, the educator has knowledge of policies and procedures regarding students with disabilities adn will 10 prepare documents for inclusion in Exceptional Children reports adn plans developed by the ECU Community School Principal, 2) coordinate contract services with other agencies, including Pitt County Schools, and 3) actively participate in the school's student support team meetings, special education referral, and annual special education meetings.  The EC Director/Special Educator will also work collaboratively with the ECU Community School Principal, university faculty/staff and others to facilitate and implement innovative instruction to achieve the mission of the school and support the successful social-emotional, physical, and academic development of the students within the Community School.
